Viennese University Mushrooms
October 6-11, 2025 — 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. — Boutique Romana
Initiative to promote interdisciplinary mycelium research and networked university structures.
"Wiener Hochschul-Schwammerl" is an initiative that connects the artistic, scientific, and design positions of students from various Viennese universities. Inspired by mycelium—the underground network of fungi—new forms of collaboration are emerging: decentralized, organic, and multi-voiced.
The exhibition showcases the sensitive interaction of students from a wide range of disciplines—from architecture to art to microbiology—with our environment. Each project explores mycelium, each in its own unique way. It highlights the diversity of approaches used to address today's challenges creatively, research-wise, and critically. The exhibition's centerpiece is the Boutique Romana in Vienna's fifth district. From there, it expands beyond temporary exhibition furniture to the Neville Bridge, transforming the public space for a week and inviting passersby to become part of the mycelial network.
From speculative designs for living and breathing structures, to waste processes and mycoremediation, to three-dimensional design with living material, artistic, scientific, and philosophical perspectives are presented, opening up perspectives on the enormous capabilities of mycelium. It also asks: What can we humans learn from these symbiotic systems?
The exhibition thus also marks the beginning of an invisible process: a growing network between people, disciplines, and universities. A network of education that continues to expand in all directions.
